And this is why I don’t really buy that “SF is respectable now”, because all the “respectable” SF is just Real Art cynically employing SF elements while taking no actual interest or joy in them. Wolfe is incontrovertible proof you can do both.

Not gonna lie his descriptions do not read well. The quotes you included seem like the same unimaginative blase sci Fi as always. Tetroni and severins don't discount the stupidity of the description of a rainbow angel with guns. This seems like comic book writing for acid rotted 15 year olds.

Did you join susbtack to develop as a writer and thinker or to avoid the standards editors would hold you to?

Neither. I joined Substack to annoy you, specifically.

Sorry just what I thought

I can understand how that might be your impression from the snippets presented here, absolutely. But if you read even a few pages of this book and still thought the same thing, the problem would be with you.

That makes zero sense bro. How does two pages of context change the flow of a standalone descriptive statement? You not only don't know how to read but you don't even have a concept of the different elements necessary to allow yourself to do so. Literary criticism isn't about snidely pointing at ego. It's about legitimate questioning of the art itself. You cannot tell me that that description is something that contains originality or depth that can be built upon. It is a standalone portion of descriptions that is written like every other sci-fi novel. I get you want to like it but it's hard for me to take serious the literary positions of "semi-amtature smash Bros gamers" who are in their 30s. Its people like this who believe escapism is freedom who have dog walked America and the rest of the world into immaturity and mediocrity. I'm glad this author is dead cuz his work undoubtedly caused me pain to look upon. Go read Ulysses or a classic or something that doesn't mask its lack of emotional and human depth with flashy bullshit and sexual proclivities of the gaze.

I mean, I’m an aspiring novelist that takes craft very seriously and I merely meant to suggest that you should give the book a shot to see if you still feel the same way. I’ve read Proust and Borges and others, sometimes specifically because they influenced Wolfe, and his work hasn’t lost a speck in my estimation by comparison. But hate a book you’ve never read if you want to, “bro”.

Here's the spoiler: I've read Wolfe!

Ah, sorry, it’s hard to tell what you’re saying from your poorly written comments.
